Knowth the passage at Knowth is thought to be roughly aligned to the spring and autumn equinoxes.

This year, the spring equinox is today, March 20th. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, spring arrives while south of the equator, autumn begins.

5000 years ago, the builders of the monument known as Cairn T at Loughcrew near Oldcastle in County Meath aligned their tomb to sunrise at the equinoxes.

Unfortunately, the weather conditions this morning didn't permit the inner chamber to be illuminated by the light of the rising sun.

The Neolithic built vast stone and clay monuments at Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth to mark points in the sidereal year.

For the Celts, the spring equinox was a time of renewal and rebirth. They marked this event with rituals and ceremonies designed to welcome the return of longer days and the growth of new life in nature.
